Fairy Tale Method Training for EMDR Therapists

7 EMDRIA CEs

Introduction

What is integral and distinguishable about the fairy tale method is its application of imagination and creativity. Through the creation of their fairy tale, clients can create their own world that may reflect a familiar day-to-day one or a world that is not visible. It is through imagination that they get glimpses to meaning that is hidden from them in their ordinary world but visible in the depths of their fairy tale world.

The fairy tale method (FTMD) is adaptable to EMD and the standard protocol. It facilitates the client through a scripted process under the direction of their EMDR therapist to create their own fairy tale story, beginning with
Phase I: history taking
Phase 2: preparation
and concluding with
Phase 7: closure phase
Phases 3: assessment – phase 6: body scan are conducted as in the standard protocol.

Other enriching features include

  • The client from the outset steps into the role of the hero/heroine of their own fairy tale. This role offers just the right amount of emotional distance between themselves, and the conflict arising from the target.
  • The client is creating their own fairy tale through the fairy tale method and eventually, they or perhaps their therapist may also consider writing their fairy tale from this experience.
  • The fairy tale method prepares the client for trauma processing.
  • The fairy tale method offers a distancing technique during trauma processing.
  • At the heart of this method is transformation: it gives permission for the client to see and believe that change is possible.
  • This method feeds the client’s imagination to seek wonder, think strategically, believe in themselves, and explore possibilities to overcome the obstacles that have been keeping them stuck.
  • The fairy tale method promotes resiliency within the client.

Who would benefit?

The fairy tale method would be beneficial to most clients. The only exception that I have encountered in my practice are clients who rely heavily on concrete thinking and who are action oriented. This reliance on concrete thinking limits their ability to think abstractly.

The course will cover

  • Why fairy tales are important to adults.
  • Fairy tale literary and psychological elements.
  • Fairy tale plot structure and its correlation to EMDR phases
  • Applying a scripted story boarding technique to prepare for processing.
  • Installing fairy tale imaginal resources.
  • Applying a distancing technique for the phase 3: assessment to phase 6: body scan.
  • Fairy Tale Method and its relationship to EMDR (Phase 1-8)

Course learning objectives are

  • To understand why fairy tales, pique the interest of adults.
  • To understand the fairy tale plot structure and how it correlates to EMDR phases.
  • To facilitate a scripted storyboarding technique to enable clients to begin to create their own fairy tale that promotes emotional skill development and resources required for the processing phases.
  • To incorporate a distancing technique to reduce the intensity of trauma processing.
  • To recognize the relationship between the fairy tale method and EMDR phases 1-8.

Responses from EMDR Therapists who have taken the Fairy Tale Method Training

“As I moved through my Fairy Tale, I experienced connection with my issue in a very reflective manner. I appreciated identifying what my core issues are along with what strengths and resources are accessible to me. I can use these resources while processing and to empower me between sessions.

Susan is a strong presenter and facilitator. She described the objectives clearly. She described the link between the Adult Fairy Tale and EMDR processing clearly. The way she described the purpose and meaning of Fairy Tales helped me to segway into developing my own Fairy Tale with ease. I look forward to applying this method in private practice – with EMDR clients.”
~ Charlaine Robinson, EMDR Certified Therapist and Consultant

“I highly recommend this training! Susan is a brilliant and passionate course developer. The course was comprehensive in both theory and practice, providing an alternative to navigate a more creative process to help clients become unstuck.

I have had the pleasure of doing this training and my client enjoyed the process and reported a significant shift in their healing journey.”
Heather Toews, Registered Clinical Counsellor and EMDR Therapist

“I really enjoyed how the use of story structure and metaphor created a natural distancing from traumatic events, while still maintaining the goals, structure, and processes of the EMDR phases.”
Shawnda Johnston, EMDR Therapist

About the Instructor

The fairy tale method came about after Susan wrote her fourth self-help book and published it in 2022. It took the form of an adult fairy tale titled: Belle’s Search for Meaning.

After this fairy tale book was released and appreciating the richness that fairy tales offer, she began to contemplate how to integrate fairy tales and EMDR. As a writer, Susan recognized the strengths and richness that fairy tales offer. As an EMDRIA Credit Provider and an EMDR Certified Therapist she appreciates firsthand, the power and efficiency of EMDR. Through closer examination, she concluded that they could complement one another. The fairy tale method is the result of this creative endeavour.

Susan has been a clinical counsellor since 2004. She has a private practice in British Columbia. She is also a published author. To date, she has written 4 self-help books. One other fairy tale is in the editing stage and will be released in 2024. It is titled The Caretaker.
