Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Canadian Certified Counsellor?
A Canadian Certified Counsellor is registered and certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). CCPA is a non-statutory self-regulating body. Counsellors certified by CCPA are permitted to use the trademarked title Canadian Certified Counsellor and/or the acronym ‘CCC”.
British Columbia does not have a regulatory body for counsellors in place. Therefore, as a Canadian Certified Counsellor, I follow the professional and ethical conduct of the CCPA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
What is a Certified EMDRIA Therapist?
A Certified EMDRIA therapist has an advanced degree from an accredited college or university, is fully licensed in their mental health professional field for independent practice and has two years of experience (minimum) in that field. Specific EMDR requirements include completion of an EMDRIA approved training program in EMDR therapy, a minimum of 50 clinical sessions in which EMDR was utilized, and 20 hours of consultation in EMDR by an Approved Consultant. To maintain the credential, EMDR Certified Therapists must complete 12 hours of continuing education in EMDR every two years.
How do I know it is time to seek professional services?
You don’t have to be in crisis to seek professional services. Having said that, therapy isn’t usually necessary for every struggle life presents to us especially if you have a strong support system. So how do you know its time to seek professional services? Here are some areas of concern to consider:
• Feeling sad, angry, or just don’t feel ‘like yourself’.
• Abusing drugs, alcohol, food, or sex to cope.
• You lost someone or something important to you.
• Something traumatic has happened.
• You can’t do the things you like to do.

Will counselling “fix” my problems?
There are no guarantees that counselling is going to “fix” the problem. Counselling is most effective when it is approached in a collaborative manner between a client and counsellor. I will provide you with the absolute highest level of professional care that I can. I may suggest outside reading or activities and may provide “homework” assignments. While in counselling, you are responsible for being as honest and open as possible. Change usually involves letting go of things or ideas that are familiar in order that new possibilities can emerge.
Are your services covered by private health insurance?
Counselling may be covered by extended health care plans. Please check with your insurance provider about coverage of counselling services. If counselling is not covered by a Canadian Certified Counsellor, it usually is a simple process to have it added to your plan. I am happy to help you navigate this.
